Date: 23/02/2009
Police are seeking public assistance to help identify a man rescued from the surf in Newcastle yesterday.
About 9:40am members of Cooks Hill Surf Club were training at Bar Beach when they have noticed a man in the surf, about 5 metres out from land, who appeared distressed.
Surf lifesavers removed the man from the water, placed him on a spinal board suspecting spinal injuries and commenced CPR to revive the unconscious man.
Ambulance personnel attended and continued CPR before transferring the man to John Hunter Hospital. The man remains in Intensive Care in a coma at hospital.
Police attached to Newcastle Local Area Command have attempted to identify the man, however their exhaustive inquiries have been unsuccessful.
Investigators are now seeking the public’s assistance to help identify him.
He is believed to be aged between 45 and 55-years-old and is of medium build with short black hair balding on top. The man has a fair complexion with dark hair over his body. At the time of the incident he was wearing black swim shorts.
Items located at Bar Beach which are thought to possibly belong to the man include black rimmed spectacles, a white T-shirt sized XL/20 and a set of six keys believed to be house keys. The key ring included a 1973 membership medallion with the Newcastle Worker’s Co-operative Club Ltd and a medallion with the 16ft Sailing Club. Inquiries with these clubs have proved unsuccessful in identifying the man.
Regulars to Bar Beach have told police they have frequently seen the man in the area.
Anyone who has information which may assist police in identifying the man is urged to contact Newcastle Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
